As a local surfer, John Harmon was tired of cleaning the tar off his feet with harsh chemicals. So, he created his own eco-friendly non-toxic beach tar remover: Oil Slick™.
Oil Slick is designed to efficiently and effectively remove the beach tar off skin, shoes, sandals, and even surfboards. Oil Slick is completely non-toxic, eco-friendly, smells great and is made locally in the Santa Barbara County area.
About the Founder
After completing his degree at SBCC, John attended Antioch University and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Marketing. As an entrepreneur, he currently runs Oil Slick and also manages social media accounts for several wineries. John grew up in Los Olivos CA and enjoys surfing, photography, hiking, traveling, and skateboarding.
I was always fascinated with the idea of starting my own business, I just never thought I would be starting Oil Slick. After participating in the Scheinfeld Center programs, I pursued entrepreneurship as a career, because I learned so much and have great confidence in what the program has given me.
John Harmon's Story
Oil Slick unique is unique because it provides a healthier and safer alternative to using other petroleum based products for removing tar off your feet such as gasoline, motor oil, and even baby oil is considered a petroleum based product.
The idea came about when John was walking back to his car after surfing and noticed a mom pouring gasoline on her young toddler, trying to get the tar off her child’s skin. It didn’t seem right to him, so he researched better ways to remove tar off skin and didn’t find an exciting result. That’s when he decided to develop a better tar remover people can trust.
Oil Slick is a handmade formula designed to efficiently and effectively remove the beach tar off skin, shoes, sandals, and even surfboards. Oil Slick is completely non-toxic, eco-friendly, smells great and is made locally in the Santa Barbara County area.
John Harmon won 1st place at the 2015 Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge and has returned as a 2021 Scheinfeld Get REAL Accelerator participant, launching his new product, Oil Slick Adhesive Remover. The adhesive remover is targeted for Type 1 diabetics who must go through the painful experience of repeatedly removing their medical device adhesive, which can irritate and damage the skin. Oils Slick Adhesive Remover makes removal easy and soothes the skin.
